Why Teach Art? Our Opinion in a Nutshell.

Art is very important!  It is visual communication. It develops fine motor skills, encourages creative thinking and originality and effects our everyday life in profound ways.  Understanding how visual communication influences nearly everything we do rests, I believe, in teaching students to have a good understanding of the elements and principles of art and how these are used in master art throughout the ages along with an understanding of a variety of techniques in media.  All of this can be taught if each lesson if approached holistically. Which is why, by the way, Visual Manna exists! To bring that holistic approach is a format that is fun to learn and easy to teach.

Elements of a Successful Art Lesson – Four Things to Include

In my opinion, the makings of a good art lesson includes four elements:

1. In every lesson, have children learn something new about art and have fun doing it.  This includes learning techniques in a variety of media, the elements and principles of art and vocabulary of the arts,  and art appreciation.

2. Each child should feel comfortable and encouraged in practicing self-expression.

3. Each child can explore and be encouraged about discovering hidden talents and have a new appreciation of the importance of art and the role it plays in the world around them.

4. Strive to have each child produce a work of art that is unique.  Allow them to do some independent thinking once the lesson is introduced; to be able to put a work together that is uniquely theirs.  Through art, each child can learn how to not be afraid of failure and have the tenacity of an inventor.  The ability to do this independent thinking can enhance their future success in other subject areas.

I hope this helps as you make your lesson plans. Consider using our curriculum! We incorporate all these elements into an easy to use format for students AND teachers. We also use art as a method of incorporating other core subjects into the material. Art is not just an extracurricular activity! I know in Missouri, where I live, you have to track core hours. With our materials, your art time can count for core because of how we integrate math, science, history and literature into the lessons. Learn more about our products here:

You May Have Children Who Struggle With Art – One Mom’s Experience

Do some of your children struggle in the area of art? We can help with that! Visual Manna owner Sharon Jeffus has had years of experience teaching all varieties of struggling  young learners art. Here is a letter we received from one mom about her experience:

Dear Sharon,

I have been so blessed by your art instruction to my children. I have struggled for a number of years to offer them art instruction and have never been happy with what was available. Once we walked into your studio it was such a relief and I felt that we had moved into the hands of a master that would guide my children into discovering their artistic side.

They have enjoyed their classes and your calm encouraging manner has left them feeling successful and eager to experiment. The projects they have created have encompassed a number of different mediums and techniques and they are really starting to blossom as artists. We can’t wait until our next class and that is really saying something, as one of my children is not always open to creativity. You have been able to tailor a class to meet the needs of two learners that come from very different places; one likes to follow rules and the other likes to be creative and playful. I thank you for your time, patience, and sharing your wonderful gift to help unlock their inner artist.

Sincerely,

Cynthia Moran

Thank you Cynthia! We love to help students AND teachers enjoy art. Check out all our offerings to help you with this!
