Semester Classes for Fall
Basic Art Grades 3-6
In this class students will learn vocabulary of the arts, art appreciation, and art techniques in every lesson. They will learn how to create a work of art that will communicate an idea. They will have an opportunity to be creative in every lesson. They will learn to use a variety of tools, techniques and medias in the correct way to enhance their work. They will learn how to use art materials and tools in a safe and responsible manner.
1. Students will learn about the beginnings of art. They will make petroglyphs and replicate cave paintings. They will learn drawing by using basic geometric shapes.
2. Students will study still life pictures in history. They will look at still life in the realistic, Impressionistic, Expressionistic and abstract style. The will learn how to do shading, shadow and texture. They will complete a realistic still life.
They will do in black and white first, and then use color. They will learn techniques in oil pastel.
3. Students will do a one point perspective of a bridge. They will also do a one point perspective of a city. They will do a two point perspective of a castle.
4. Students will understand landscape and how to put atmospheric perspective in a picture.
5. Students will learn about positive and negative space and do an outer space picture.
6. Students will look at master bird pictures by Audubon and do a realistic bird. Students will master the medium of colored pencils and learn how to blend and mix.
7. Students will do several colorwheel pictures including a colorwheel animal and a colorsheel clock.
8. Students will understand complementary colors and do three pictures using each combination. Students learn how to shade with the complement.
9. Students recognize symbols in American history and heraldry and design a shield.
10. Students learn how to do a portrait of a famous person.
11. Students learn how to master the medium of water color by doing watercolor flowers and insects.
12. Students learn about three dimensional art and do a sculpture.
13. Students make a taxonomy mobile. They learn about symmetry and formal and informal balance.
14. Students make a poster and learn about graphic art and fonts.
15. Students create a computer picture using an open source program.
16. Students do an op art design.
17. Students learn how to draw animals using willow charcoal.
18. Students will look at fabric art and do a weaving project.
19. Students will look at famous woodblock prints and learn a technique to do their own print.
20. Students will learn about murals. Students will make a collage.
Basic Art Techniques Grades 7-12
Students will learn how to select and apply two-dimensional and three dimensional media, techniques, and processes to communicate ideas in a finished work of art. In every class students will focus on a master artist and his use of technique to achieve the desired effect.
1. Students will learn how to use pencil and charcoal and show shading, shadow and texture in a picture.
2. Students will learn how to master one and two point perspective and how to correctly use a protracter and compass in design.
3. Students will learn how to do portraits using the classic Greek proportions of the face.
4. Students will learn how to do a landscape using chalk pastels.
5. Students will learn how to put together a balanced composition still life and learn how to use oil pastels.
6. Students will learn how to sculpt a horse head and a dolphin out of terra cotta clay.
7. Students will make a mobile and study the elements of design and balance.
8. Students will learn how to us a computer drawing program and create a picture using it.
9. Students will do a collage from a variety of materials found at home.
10. Students will learn how to creat a variety of elements in architecture.
11. Students will study positive/negative space and do a space art picture.
12. Students will learn watercolor wet brush and dry brush watercolor techniques and do a variety of pictures using them.
13. Students will learn how to use ink and shading with stippling, crosshatching, and stroking.
14. Students will do calligraphy and do an Illuminated Text.
15. Students learn graphic art techniques and do a poster.
16. Students will design a costume for a period in history.
17. Students will study set design and design a set for a play.
18. Students will study photography and learn the basics of taking good pictures and putting them into a program and modifying them.
19. Students will do a finished painting. They will understand the techniques of blending and mixing colors.
20. Students will study presentation and framing of a work of art and prepare for an art show.
They will understand how to present their porfolio.
Creative Writing and Art
Students will gain skills in writing standard English (including grammar, usage, punctuation, spelling, capitalization). Students will gain experience in reading and evaluating fiction, poetry and drama and see how it relates to the visual arts. Students will learn how to conduct research to answer questions and evaluate information and ideas and to communicate these ideas verbally and visually.
They will learn how to use technological tools and other resources to locate, select and organize information and organize this date into useful forms to communicate ideas.
1. Students will learn how to use descriptive words. Students will learn how to draw and shade basic shapes and illustrate words. Students will write and illustrate the four paragraph types; descriptive, narrative, persuasive, and expository.
2. Students will write a character sketch and learn how to draw a cariacture and portrait. Students will understand how portraits of people in history communicated ideas.
3. Students will study editorial cartoons and do their own editorial and editorial cartoon for submission to a paper.
4. Students will write and illustrate a limerick, a sonnet, an haiku poem, and a free verse poem.
5. Students will write and illustrate a one act play including set design.
6. Students will learn how to write dialogue and create a comic strip with an original character.
7. Students will study short story format and write and illustrate their own short story.
8. Students will write and illustrate an allegory and a fable.
9. Students will study graphic art and advertisting and design a travel brochure.
10. Students will study propoganda techniques and use of symbols and design a poster that persuades.
Class is given every week from September 1 until December 31. Class is offered 15 weeks. Classes can be made up at teacher's convenience. Power points are available for make up work. Cost is $250.00 for the course. It can be paid in 2 parts. Art kit available for $35.00.

Harley is very much into art and with my health (can’t drive far or sometimes not at all) and finances it is marvelous to be able to provide “Real” art classes right here in our home, with the supplies delivered, and at a reasonable cost.
Derek has been requesting more art and I just haven’t been physically up to getting it all together and doing a lesson – so the younger kit and class have really helped me out – they are both so excited for Mondays now!

Do you have a webcam on your computer? It is perfect for doing lessons via your own home computer. Art lessons are available for all ages. You can watch the teacher step by step and ask questions as you complete your project. The teacher can see your finished product and give you pointers all in the comfort of your own house.

How to Do Watercolor Flowers
This is just a three hour class that teaches you how to do beautiful and amazing flowers from all around the world including Israel. Each person taking the class will do a finished watercolor suitable to frame and three cards with envelopes to send and bless friends with. This foolproof method to paint flowers makes you an artist even if you have never been able to paint before. Cost is $30.00 per student or $40.00 for two. We want you to take this with a friend or child. Art kit with tube watercolors and watercolor paper and brushes available for $30.00. 1. CASTLES AND KNIGHTS
LESSON ONE IS ON DRAWING CASTLES AND KNIGHTS. KIDS LOOK AT CASTLES IN HISTORY AND CASTLES IN LITERATURE AND LEARN HOW TO DRAW THEM IN ONE AND TWO POINT PERSPECTIVE. A DRAGON DRAWING IS INCLUDED. Great educational fun!!!!
2. AMERICAN HISTORY AND ART KIDS LEARN ALL ABOUT THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND TRUMBALL'S WORK AND LEARN HOW TO DRAW A STILL LIFE WITH THINGS COMPOSED OF THAT TIME PERIOD. THEY ALSO LEARN HOW TO DRAW HORSES WHEN STUDYING ART FROM REMINGTON AND RUSSELL.
3. THE 1900'S IN ART FINALLY, THE LAST LESSON IS ON THE DELIGHTFUL TIME PERIOD OF THE CURRIER AND IVES PRINTS AND ALSO A PROJECT ON THE TIME PERIOD OF THE 1930'S FOCUSED AROUND ROUTE 66. THE INVENTIONS, THE AIRPLANES, THE CARS, THE CLOTHING, THE APPLIANCES ARE ALL DISCUSSED. KIDS LEARN DRAWING AND PAINTING AND DO PROJECTS AROUND THESE TIME PERIODS.
AGES 4-7 take the following three part class.
1. ARTSY ANIMALS IN THE RAINFOREST
KIDS HAVE FUN LEARNING ABOUT THE HABITAT OF THE RAINFOREST. THEY DO PROJECTS THAT INCLUDE MAKING A JUMPING FROG AND FROG CALLER. THEY GO TO WEBSITES AND LEARN ALL ABOUT THE ART OF ROUSSEAU. THIS IS A FAST MOVING, VERY SIMPLE TWO HOURS WITH LOTS OF FINE MOTOR SKILL ACTIVITIES.
2. ARTSY ANIMALS IN THE MOUNTAINS
KIDS LEARN ALL ABOUT BEARS, EAGLES, RABBITS AND LOTS OF ANIMALS IN THE MOUNTAIN HABITAT. THEY DO MANY FINE MOTOR SKILL ACTIVITIES, LISTEN TO MUSIC AND LOOK AT MASTER ART BY BIERDSTADT AND MORAN.
3. ARTSY ANIMALS IN THE RIVER
KIDS LEARN ALL ABOUT THE ANIMALS THEY MIGHT SEE IN THE RIVERS. THEY LOOK AT WORKS OF ART BY MONET AND GEORGE CALEB BINGHAM. THEY GO TO SCIENCE WEBSITES AND LEARN ALL ABOUT THE ANIMALS. THEY DO SEVERAL PROJECTS INCLUDING MAKING A BOAT THAT CAN REALLY SAIL.
ALL WORKSHOPS HAVE A BOOK THAT CAN GO WITH THE ACTIVITY. BOOKS ARE $10.00 EACH OR YOU CAN PURCHASE 3 ON CD FOR $20.00. You can also purchase an art kit to go with the program. Younger children's art kit is $40.00. Older student art kit is $35.00.
OUTLINE FOR THE 17 WEEK ART CLASS STARTING THE IN September
Art Class (17 lessons)
Each lesson includes master works of art, how to do different techniques, and the vocabulary of the arts. A typical lesson includes at least three master works of art, five vocabulary of the art definitions, and instruction on a technique in art. When we learn about atmospheric perspective and depth, we recognize it in different master works of art. We start with ancient art, and conclude with comic strip art and animation. The class is 17 lessons. Students do a lesson every week. The lesson is from 1 and 1/2 to 2 hours long. Several time slots are available. One on one teacher interaction occurs. Cost is $350.00 for the complete class. Students receive Master Drawing and Visual Manna One and Two on CD. They also receive a unit study to go with Visual Manna One so they can study music, geography, history, etc with the daily lesson if they choose to do so. All of our art is appropriate for family viewing.
An art kit for all supplies is available for $50.00, or students can use their own supplies.
Lesson 1
Lesson one included ancient art, cave painting, megaliths, petroglyphs.
Students do contour drawing and understand about how to use shading, shadow and texture
in their drawings. They also look at drawings by Durer, Rubens, and Escher.
Lesson 2
Egytian Art
Lesson two includes studying the pyramids of Egypt. We also study Egyptian art, and look at an Egyptian statue of a hippo and cat. We sculpt these creatures step by step out of terra cotta clay.
Lesson 3
Grecian Art
Lesson three takes us to ancient Greece. We draw and study the Parthenon in linear perspective. We study the "Charioteer of Delphi." We do a Greek vase painting and study the subjects of everyday life in Greece pictured on the vases. We learn how to copy a drawing to a curved surface, and drawing the human figure in movement.
Lesson 4
Early Chinese Art
Lesson four is Chinese art. We look at the Terra Cotta Soldiers of Xian. We study bats in Chinese art, the early production of beautiful patterned silk, and painting on silk. We create a design with balance, symmetry, rhythm and value. We study early sculptures.
Lesson 5
Roman Art
We study Roman frescos from Pompeii. We also study and learn to draw the Arch of Constantine.
The Church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople and the famous mosaics of Ravenna are studied. We learn about the Colosseum. We create a mosaic and decide where to put it in a building.
Lesson 6
Early Medieval Art
Representational art, stained glass windows in the Canterbury Cathedral, and the Book of Kells are studied. Students learn how to do an Illuminated Text.
Lesson 7
Medieval Art
Students learn how to make a castle, how to draw a knight in armor (we copy step by step Raphael's "St George and the Dragon)."Celtic art, Byzantine art, Islamic art, and Gothic art are studied and students learn to recognize each style. We also review what heraldry is.
Lesson 8
We will look at the works of Fra Angelico, Botticelli, SandroDonatello (Donato di Niccolo di Betto Bardi), Giotto and Masaccio. We will also look at the influence Florence and the Medici family had on the art of the time. Students will learn how to paint step by step with acrylic paint.
Lesson 9
The High Renaissance
We study Brunellschi and the development of systematic perspective. We learn how to do this, and recognize its use in master works of art of the times. We look at the three great masters, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, and the works they are famous for. We learn how to paint a fresco and also talk about Durer and his impact on the development of the printing press.
Lesson 10
Baroque and Rococco
We study the great works of Rembrandt, Rubens and Gainsborough, and do a picture on black paper with white chalk and charcoal; and then do it using charcoal on white paper. We also design a piece of Rococco furniture from the palace of Louis the fourteenth.
Lesson 11
We study the realism of the early Dutch artists including Vermeer. We study Abraham van Beijeren and the marvelous still life's so famous in the 1600's and learn how to make things look transparent and opaque. We learn how to use the medium of oil pastels in this project. We also look at Romanticism in art and replicate "The Lady of Shalot."
Lesson 12
American Genre Art
This delightful lessson talks about all the wonderful American artist who pictured a time and place in American history. This includes Trumball, Leutze, Catlyn, Remington, Russell, Currier and Ives, Hopper, Norman Rockwell and more. Students make their own genre painting depicting present day America. They learn basic techniques in composition and design, center of interest and color theory.
Lesson 13
Impressionism
Students look at works by Monet, Manet, Pissaro, Degas, and Renior. We learn how to paint trees and flowers. We practice capturing light in a picture. Students complete an Impressionist painting.
Lesson 14
Expressionism
We study pattern, color and line and look at works by Matisse, Beckman and Munch. We also look at Expressionism in architecture and create a building with an Expressionist theme using perspective such as Ludwig Mies van der Rohe's Friedrichstraße 's skyscraper project. We also talk about Sulivan the father of the skyscraper and his student Frank Lloyd Wright.
Lesson 15
We study these art forms and do a project in each. We talk about the master artists Tiffany, Grandma Moses, and Ansel Adams.
Lesson 16
Abstract Art, Computer Art, Fractals and Tessalations, Thomas Nast, Charles Schultz
We created a fractal and a tessalation and learn about non objective art. We study comic strip art and poster art.
Lesson 17
Computer Art and Animation, Portfolio, Art Show
We show students how to do computer graphics and how to do an animation using software included in the class. Also how to keep and present a portfolio and how to show your work are both included.
Outline for Creative Writing
and Art Class
This is a brief synopsis of lessons. Each lesson has websites we go to and assignments/lessons to go with the topic. Each lesson also teaches an art technique.
Lesson 1
How to write a paragraph: topic sentence, body, closing.
How to write a descriptive and expository paragraph.
Students look at master works of Bierdstadt and Moran. Students describe some pictures learning how to find descriptive words using a thesaurus. Students do a landscape using atmospheric perspective in charcoal. They write a descriptive paragraph about "In the Mountains," by Bierdstadt and an expository paragraph about how to make a landscape have depth.
Lesson 2
How to write a persuasive paragraph. We learn about propoganda and snarl and purr words.
We learn how to write a narrative paragraph and look at master works of art by Quidor and Dore who illustrated works of art including works by Washington Irving.
We also look at posters by La trec and learn how to make a poster.
Lesson 3
How to write a character sketch.
We read several famous character sketches from literature including Ichabod Crane, Teddy Roosevelt, etc.
We look at portraits by Copely, Cassatt, and Leonardo da Vinci. Students write a character sketch and learn how to draw a portrait. We also talk about clauses, complete sentences and conjunctions.
Lesson 4
We learn how to write the setting in a story. We read several famous settings from literature. We also look at master works of art by Winslow Homer and Washington Allston and photographs by Ansel Adams. We also learn about writing similes and metaphors. We learn how to paint a landscape.
Lesson 5
We learn how to put dialogue in a story. We also learn how to draw comic characters. We learn about oxymorons and hyperbole. We look at art work by master cartoonists Berrington and Nast. We learn about creating an original character for our story and all about copyright.
Lesson 6
We learn how to write a rough draft of a story. We learn about the kinds of stories: mystery, science fiction, fantasy, ect. We learn how to paint in watercolor. We learn how to do flowers and ocean scenes. We look at work by Monet and Van Gogh.
Lesson 7
We do a first proof of our story. We read it aloud and have two people give us pointers about it. We look at editing marks. In art, we look at architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright and Sullivan and learn how to draw buildings for our book cover in perspective.
Lesson 8
We learn about poetry. This lesson is on the different genres of poetry including narrative, epic, dramatic,
lyrical, verse and prose. We practice writing a sonnet and talk about Shakepeare's sonnets. We also look at sonnets by Michaelangelo. We do a fresco in art and look at master Renaissance art for inspiration to write.
Lesson 9
We write concrete poetry. We also learn about haiku poetry and look a variety of landscapes. We write about "The Past," by Thomas Cole. We learn how to do Illuminated Text and do a picture of our haiku.
Lesson 10
We do a final draft of our original short story. We talk about submitting it for publication. We also learn about story illustration. We look at the works of the great American genre artist Norman Rockwell and talk about his illustrations for the the Saturday Evening Post. We do a mixed media illustration.
Lesson 11
We learn about famous novels in literature. We learn how to do a book or movie review for publication. We look at several reviews. We also learn how to animate using the free downloadable program SCRATCH developed by MIT.
Lesson 12
We learn about newspaper writing and jounalism. We do a news story. We also look at famous jounals and talk about journal writing. We draw an editoral cartoon and study famous cartoons in history.
Lesson 13
We learn how to write an outline. Our focus will be doing a research paper in MLA format. We learn how to document quotes and information in our paper. We talk about fiction versus nonfiction. In art, we study journalistic photography and do a charcoal drawing of a photograph using a grid.
Lesson 14
We talk about writing an essay. What is a thesis? We begin an essay on a certain animal. We start with our thesis statement. We also learn how to sculpt an animal out of terra cotta clay. We look at work by the master artist Audubon. We also look at work by Remington and Russell.
Lesson 15
Writing a comparison paper is our next topic. We compare the works of Monet to the works of Vincent van Gogh. We note the differences and the similarities. We put together a work of art using elements of both of their styles.
Lesson 16
We put together an art portfolio and a writing portfolio. We learn how to critique our own work. We choose a work of art and a work of writing to enter into a competition.
Basic Drawing Class
We will offer a basic drawing class composed of eight internet workshops live via SKYPE.
This is appropriate for ages 9 and up. Gifted younger children could also take this class. Lessons are $25.00 per lesson or $150.00 for all eight classes. Master Drawing CD is included in the class.
Lesson one
Students learn different techniques of shading. Students learn how to draw basic shapes using shading, shadow and texture. Students learn basic elements of composition and design and create an original animal composition. Master artist Durer
Lesson two
Students learn how to do one point perspective. We draw bridges from around the world in one point perspective. We also look at "The Last Supper" by Leondardo da Vinci and do a room in perspective.
Lesson three
Students learn how to draw a face in the classic Greek proportions. We look at portraits by Leonardo da Vinci, Copely and Peale. We also look at a face done in Expressionism.
Lesson four
Students learn how to draw a landscape. We look at master work of Bierdstadt and do a landscape using atmospheric perspective. We learn how to do a tree and show scale.
Lesson five
Students learn how to do a two point perspective. We look at works by Hopper and Frank Lloyd Wright.
We draw a house in two-point perspective. We incorporate atmospheric perspective in the picture.
Lesson six
Students learn how to do implied texture in an animal drawing. We study works of Remington and Russel and draw a horse head. We also sculpt a horse head.
Lesson seven
Students learn how to draw the figure in movement. We look at works by Degas and Bellows. We do an athlete in action picture and incorporate it into a poster design. We also learn about SCRATCH and how to animate a figure.
Lesson eight
We look at master still life pictures including works by Harnett and Vermeer. We do a still life in the styles of realism, Impressionism, Expressionism and abstract.
Teaching Math Through Art
Students do a flip book, design and build their dream house to mathmatical proportions, make an accordian metamorphosis picture and learn to do fractions as they learn origami. They play a guessing game learning estimation and they learn how to do a grid. Finally we do a beautiful fractal all on the internet. This three hour class is $60.00 and includes Teaching Math Through Art on CD.
Writing a Book Workshop
This workshop about writing and publishing books gives information on the basics of writing as well as getting your book ready for publication, promoting your book, and where to send your book. Jeffus is a graduate of John Brown University and has a B.S.S.E. in Art Education, a certification to teach English from the University of Arkansas, and has written over 20 books in conjunction with her nationally known company Visual Manna located in Salem Missouri. Class is 6 hours. Cost is $75.00 per class via SKYPE.
